There are many factors that may contribute to teeth needing to be realigned. It may be because a missing tooth, sucking your thumb as child, the way you were fed as a baby, or natural changes in the structure of your jaw.

If your alignment issue is minor, you can likely be fit for a set of clear aligners like Invisalign®. At the end of the process, you’ll not only have a more appealing smile, but a better functioning mouth. However, this is not the end. There will still be some tension lingering in the periodontal ligaments that anchor your teeth in the sockets. If the tension is not anchored in some way it may cause your teeth to relapse back out of proper alignment.

To prevent this issue, Dr. Richard Barnett will fit you with a retainer at his orthodontic clinic. It will likely a clear plastic mouthpiece made from a material that is similar to Invisalign aligner trays. The total duration of your retention phase will likely be the same amount of time that it took to correct your smile with Invisalign.

You can drink normally with the retainer in your mouth, but you’ll want to take it out while eating to prevent damage. You can keep the clear plastic retainer in the case provided.

It can be helpful to rinse your retainer each time you take it out to clear away any plaque or residual food particles. You can soak it each night in a mixture of half cold water and half antiseptic mouthwash or denture cleaner. If you notice any plaque buildup, you can gently brush the unit with a soft-bristled toothbrush and a little non-abrasive toothpaste. Abrasive toothpaste may dull the plastic material, blurring the look of your smile.
