Your orthodontic retainer is a very important appliance, especially because it keeps your teeth in their proper positions and helps you maintain the beautiful smile you love. If you want your retainer to take care of you, then you need to take care of it, which means you need to do everything you can to keep your retainer in tip-top shape. Our orthodontist, Dr. Richard Barnett, is happy to help you do so by encouraging you to do the following things:

-Rinse your retainer regularly: It’s best to rinse your retainer with water as soon as you take it out of the mouth. This can help you avoid plaque buildup on the appliance, which can, in turn, help you avoid cavities and gum disease.

-Deeply clean your retainer often: You can use a soft-bristled toothbrush and mild dish soap, a denture brush or denture cleaner to clean your appliance. Whatever you do, don’t use products that have abrasives. This is recommended because abrasives can scratch and ruin the retainer.

-Keep your retainer in a safe place: If you keep it in a safe place, you reduce your chances of losing it. Make sure the safe place isn’t a hot environment or in a low, easy-to-reach spot. The hot environment can melt the retainer and the low spot can make it accessible to the family pet. For some reason, dogs love to chew retainers.
