Orthodontic emergencies are not fun, especially when you experience one when you’re away from home. However, the good news is that there are things you can do to handle the problem and improve the situation until you get back. To help you, our orthodontist, Dr. Richard Barnett, is happy to explain the next steps you need to take.

First, adjust the braces. If you have broken a bracket, make sure to slide it back over the appropriate tooth. This will help you relieve any pressure that the bracket is causing. If you have broken a wire, use the end of a pencil (the eraser) to guide the wire back into place. If this is difficult, push the wire to a place where it doesn’t irritate or bother you.

Second, grab your orthodontic wax. Place a piece of wax over each broken area. This will help you smooth out the hardware to make it less bothersome. This is important because sometimes broken hardware can cause cankers and sores in the mouth. Placing wax over the area will also help you keep the bracket from sliding around.

Third, contact Barnett Orthodontics. You don’t necessarily need to rush home for treatment, but you should call our team and schedule an appointment for when you’re back into town. Our team will give you any details you need to care for your braces while you’re away.
